Folegandros was later colonized by the Dorians and lonians and later still joined the Athenian Confederacy.. Subjugated by the Romans, in 1207 it became part of the Duchy of Naxos and was governed by the Gozzodini family until 1607 when it fell to the Turks. The island was repeatedly devastated and raided by pirates.

SIGHTSEEING:The capital is built high above the port, Karavostasi, and consists of two parts. The older, more picturesque section lies in the area around the fortress (Kastro) erected by Marco Sanudo in 1212 .This Kastro resembles the ones on Sifnos and Kimolos. AI Palaiokastro one can see remains of the fortifications and houses of the ancient ,city. Tucked into the walls is the Church of the Panayia, the most beautiful on the island. The cave of Chrysospilia with stalagmites and stalagtites is still unexplored; in ancient times it appears to have been set aside for cult - worship Tiny settlements exist at Ano Meria while at Kastelli there are ruins of a small fortress The beaches of Agios Yeorgios and Livadi offer good swimming. Lacking amenities and roads, the island has a few rooms for rent. Visitors in search of quiet will find it here.
