How to get there: By boat from piraeus, caique to and from neighbouring islands

HISTORY: a mountainous island Kimolos is known for fuller’s earth, astory material used in manufacture of porcelain. According the myth, the hero Kimolos founded the first settlement of the island and gave it his name.its history is linked from antiquity with that of Milos, on which it has always depended.During the Frankish occupation, it went by name of Argentiera and was used as a hideiut by pirates.

SINGHTSEEING:The ruins of ancient Kimolos lie in the area of Ellinika, 4 km south-west of the capital.At Limni-Varvarakaina there is a cave with tombs,similar to the catacombs on Milos; other caves exist at Kako Potamo and Vromolimni. At Palaiokastro one can see the remains of a small tower know as Portare. The capital (1 km north of the horbour, Psathi) is built around the medieaeval castle.The inner castle dates from 13th or 14th century,the outer castle from th 17th. Of the older churches the Cristos (1592) and the Evangelistria (1608) are most interesting. Two archaeological collections may be viewed one at the museum , the other at the Afentakio Foundation.The island is blessed with lovely beaches, easy to reach by caique or on foot, but is has yet to be developed for tourism. A fine place for a tranquil holiday.
