Kassos

HISTORY:Kassos is the southernmostisland in the Dodecanese and is situated very close toKarpathos, with which it has a common history.It was fiirst settled by the Phoenicians and shared the fate of its neighbours until the l3th century AD. Ruled by the family Comaro of Venice, it suffered its greatest destruction during the Turkish occupation: in 1824, the Turkish-Egyptian fleet burnt and laid waste to the whole island lt was united with Greece in 1947.

SIGHTSEEING: A predominantly mountainous island, Kassos has an interesting interior which will reward exploration. In the capital, Fry, built on the Gulf of Bouka, there are anumber of old mansions and the local museum has a collection of both archaeo%gical artefacts and folk art. The main aftractions are the Sellai cave with its stalactites, the churches and the ruined fortresses in the villages of Aghia Marina, Polis (the old capital), Emboreio and Panayia, as well as the charming hamlet of Arvanitohori. nestled and the Archangel Michael.
