Area:41 sq. km., Population: 916, Capital Mandraki,

How to get there: By ship from Piraeus, Crete and the oi Dodecanese.

HISTORY:Known from mythology, Nissyros is mentioned in the Homeric epics as having participated in the Trojan War. Its history throughout the ages was linked to that of its larger neighbours. The Knights of St. John assumed control over the island in the 14th century, erecting their castle in 1315. In 1947 it was united with Greece along with the other Dodecanese.

SIGHTSEEING: An island of rare natural beauty with a serene atmosphere, Nissyros is ideal for peaceful holiday. The most impressive sight on the island is the crater of the extinct volcano at Lakki, to which the hot sulphurous springs at Loutra and Emborio owe their existence. In the capital, presided over by the castle of the Knights, may be seen sections of ancient wall and the cemetery. The houses, either white or brightly painted, stand in utter contrast to the grey volcanic rock surrounding them. Within the castle walls is the church of the Panayia Spilianis, built in 1600”which is tied with numerous local traditions. In addition to the beaches near Mandraki, there are beaches all around the island, accessible on foot or by caique; the black sand beach at Hochlaki is particularly distinctive. Possessing few facilities for tourists, Nissyros offers little in the way of amenities but much that is beautiful to its visitors.
