HISTORY: Alonnisos has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was known to the ancients as Ikos or Liadromia. The subject of a conflict between the Macedonians and Athenians,it shared the fate of the other islands and was continually raided by pirates before falling under Turkish domination. It suffered enormous damage during the 1965 earthquake, at which time the old hill-top capital was
abandoned.
SIGHTSEEING: One can visit the ruins of the
ancient city on the south-east side of the island at Kokkinokastro, where there are also the remains of a medieval castle However, Alonnisos is primarily a spot for quiet holidays The hotels are few though good, there are rooms for rent in private houses, but the road network is practically nonexistent. It is far easier to take a caique to the coastal villages and tranquil beaches around the island In addition
to Patitiri, the tiny capital Alonnisos boasts two other villages Palia (Old) Alonnisos (the former capital) and Votsi. Lovely beaches are found at Marpounta, Steni Vala and Kokkinokastro, where there are also traces of a Middle Palaeolithic settlement (100,000-33.000 BC) . Surrounding the island are numerous uninhabited islets with exquisite beaches for swimming or fishing, all accessible by caique
